Leadership Sen. Nelson led the charge in the Senate against repeal of the moratorium on offshore drilling, and helped engineer a compromise on a Gulf drilling bill, passed in the Senate, that will permanently protect the vast majority of Florida’s coast from new drilling. Together with Senator Snowe, Senator Nelson introduced S. 952 (Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Amendments Act of 2009). He also sponsored S. 2735 (Gulf Oyster Protection Act of 2009) and cosponsored S. 940 (Close Big Oil Loopholes Act of 2011) S. 859 (Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Amendments of 2009), S. 2852 (Renewable Energy Environmental Research Act of 2009), S. 575 (Clean, Low-Emission, Affordable, New Transportation Efficiency Act of 2009), S. 345 (Tropical Forest and Coral Conservation Reauthorization Act of 2009), S. 171 (Coastal and Ocean Observation System Act of 2009) and S. 2859 (Coral Reef Conservation Amendments Act of 2009).
